Thursday, March 2 was filled with intense matchups between great teams, but the game that stood out from the rest was battled between Gonzaga and Landon.
The Purple Eagles traveled to Landon ranked 3rd in the DigitalSports’ National Lacrosse Rankings with an 8-1 record among one of the teams many accolades. Not far behind, Landon’s 9-0 record put the Bears in 6th in the nation.
Landon got on the board first when Ryan Pride slipped past his defender early on in the game. Gonzaga struck back with three consecutive goals. Before the end of the quarter, Pride found Joey Epstein for a goal, leading to a 3-2 score line to close the first, advantage Eagles.
In the second, Gonzaga scored first. Then Colton Rupp scored the first of three Landon goals in three minutes off a pass from Epstein. Nate Buller scored the second followed by Kennedy Dunn off a Rupp feed.
The third quarter was a battle of the defenses, Gonzaga scoring the only goal to tie the score at 5-5 going into the final quarter.
Buller scored less than two minutes in. The attackman followed up with another tally four minutes later, this one off a pass from Rupp. With just under five minutes to go, Gonzaga struck mesh. From that point on, long Landon offensive possessions and a stifling defense kept the Eagles off the board, giving Landon the 7-6 victory.
Now with a 10-0 start to its season, Landon is on fire, taking down everything in its path. Expect even bigger things to come from Landon as the Bears work their way through the DC IAC.
The Bears’ next challenge is on March 4 against Coronado.
